6 Tips to Avoid Dental Problems This Halloween
September 30, 2021
Halloween is nearly here. You are putting some finishing touches on your kids’ costumes, putting up some decorations, and getting ready for heaps of candy. As great and exciting as this holiday is, it definitely doesn’t have the best effect on teeth. However, you don’t need to cut out any activities this year due to concerns over your family’s smiles. Here are some tips for enjoying the spooky season without a mouthful of cavities!
Choose Candy Carefully
Having sweet treats from time to time is delicious, but some are worse than others when it comes to oral health. That’s why you need to be careful about the types of candy that you and your kids are enjoying. It’s best to avoid stickier sweets because they adhere to the teeth. Sticking to chocolate is a better idea because it easily washes away soon afterwards.
Have a Plan
Having a candy bar or two isn’t so bad, but with buckets of sugary treats sitting around, it can be difficult to set limitations. Have everyone in your family choose a few of their favorites. You can decide what to do with the rest. You could donate it or save it for a later date.
Time Candy Consumption
The best time for your family to enjoy sweets is during or shortly after a meal. This is because saliva production is increased at this time. This will help to wash away food particles that cause oral health issues over time.
Stay Hydrated
Water is crucial for nearly every system in your body to function properly. Your smile is no exception. Staying hydrated prevents dry mouth which provides the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Fluoride in tap water is a leading way to prevent tooth decay. If you are choosing bottled water, look for one that contains fluoride.
Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
This is always crucial, but especially when more sugar is in the diet. Your family should brush twice and floss once each day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste. If it’s been over six months, schedule your next cleaning and checkup.
Chew Sugarless Gum
A great alternative to a sugary piece of candy is some sugarless gum. It tastes sweet and delicious, and it helps increase saliva production in the mouth. Try having a piece about 20 minutes after meals to reduce tooth decay.
This Halloween, it pays to be mindful. By using the tips listed above, your family can come out of the spooky season cavity-free!
