The Link Between Seasonal Allergies and Oral Health
May 3, 2023
Every year, millions of people endure seasonal allergies; and if you’re a part of that unlucky group that suffers from them, you probably find yourself wishing for a time when you could breathe clearly! But did you know that in addition to causing all of that sinus pressure, seasonal allergies can also affect your oral health? Here’s more from your dentist about this connection along with some tips for keeping your smile safe during allergy season.
The Link Between Seasonal Allergies and Oral Health
Even though it might sound a little far-fetched, all of that sneezing, congestion, and sinus pressure that you experience during allergy season can cause problems for your dental health. Here are a few common side effects that those with allergies can experience inside their mouth:
- Tooth pain and sensitivity – It’s common to experience sinus pain and pressure when you’re battling allergies; the spaces in your head fill with mucus, causing aches and discomfort in your face.
- Dry mouth – Dry mouth is incredibly bad for your oral health; since your mouth relies heavily on the flow of saliva to keep bacteria from congregating, if your mouth’s dry due to allergies, or due to the antihistamines that you might be taking, you’re at an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease!
- Sore throat – It’s not uncommon to experience a sore throat due to allergies, which can be caused by postnasal drip. This sore throat is also associated with bad breath, but since it originates in the throat, brushing your teeth usually doesn’t help.
General Advice for Protecting Your Oral Health During Allergy Season
The good news is that there’s so much you can do to actively safeguard your smile during allergy season. Consider the following tips:
- Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water; this counteracts the dry mouth that can result from allergies, and it also helps your body to flush away excess mucus.
- Gargle with saltwater – This habit can help to flush mucus from your sinuses and also counteracts bad breath!
- Brush and floss regularly – Allergies are not an excuse to stop caring about your oral health! Continue to brush and floss daily and also rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash.
- Take allergy medication – Controlling your allergies is also going to be in your best interest. You should try to avoid things that you know trigger your allergies and take allergy medication or seek allergy shots if necessary.
- Visit your dentist – Of course, you still want to continue visiting your dentist biannually for preventive care. In the case of tooth pain that isn’t ceasing, you should mention that to your dentist; they can help you figure out the cause and come up with an appropriate treatment plan.
