Denture Dangers: Holiday Foods to Be Avoided

Having dentures as a tooth replacement can be a real blessing, especially around the holidays. However, if you’re not careful about certain foods, you could break or damage your replacement teeth. To avoid spending the break at the dentist’s or going without your prosthetic for a day or two, beware of these denture dangers!

Hard or Sticky Candy

Taffy, jawbreakers, candy cands – whatever your seasonal candy weakness is, think about how crunchy or sticky it is before you bite. Dentures are designed to be durable, but rock-hard substances could very well result in chips or fractures. Chewy textures, meanwhile, could dislodge your replacement teeth or get stuck underneath them and irritate your gums. Either way, it’s not likely to be a comfortable experience!

Steak and Other Tough Meats

You’ll probably be safe with gnawing on some Thanksgiving turkey (as long as it’s off the hard bone). However, if meats like steak or pork are usually on the menu, it’s probably best to find a different entrée. These tough customers require a lot of tearing, which could damage your dentures or pull them off your gums. Trying to eat them would be somewhat like trying to consume hard and sticky candy at the same time.

Crispy Vegetables

Vegetables are good for your general and oral health, no doubt about that. Crispy selections like carrots and celery can be just as rough on your dentures as Skittles or steak, though. They’re not as likely to shatter your replacement teeth, but it’ll be challenging to keep your dentures in place while trying to eat them. Fortunately, if you still want the health benefits, a blender can make quick work of snappy vegetables by turning them into a delicious smoothie!

Avoiding these foods will help you dodge a dental emergency during the holidays. Plus, you’ll benefit from the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’ll be able to rely on your prosthetic while enjoying the time spent with family and friends. Remember to take care of your dentures, and have happy holidays!
